Mosquito Control Awareness 2016 in the North Shore

mosquito with belly full of bloodMosquitoes are the deadliest creatures on the planet, responsible for more human deaths than any other animal. Each year we use the nationally publicized Mosquito Control Awareness week to remind the residents of the North Shore of Massachusetts why mosquito control is so very important. June 26-July 2, 2016 marks this year’s American Mosquito Control Association’s mosquito control awareness week, the first since the devastating Zika Virus emerged on the world scene.

Given that we have had no local transmission of the Zika Virus, we are very lucky, but continue to remain vigilant in informing the public about Zika, Zika prevention, and other mosquito-borne viruses. In the North Shore of Massachusetts, the main disease threat that comes from mosquitoes is West Nile Virus for humans, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) for humans or horses and of course the dangerous heartworm that can be deadly for our canine companions.

Rare Tick-Borne Illness Is Life-Threatening For Rockport Man

Babesiosis-Rockport-MassIf you aren’t sure whether or not awareness of ticks and tick-borne illnesses is truly important in Massachusetts, ask Rockport resident Alan MacMillan. He is likely to tell you that “important” isn’t a strong enough word. The Gloucester Times accounts his story that starts as a walk in the woods and ends with him still tired and recovering, but thankful he is alive.

In mid-March, Alan took a walk in the woods. Later that day he found a tick and removed it without any trouble. It wasn’t until much later, May 6th in fact, that he began to feel sick. As his temperature rose, he checked himself into the emergency room and after several tests, he was diagnosed with Babesiosis, a tick-borne illness.

Babesiosis is Life-Threatening

Unlike most tick-borne illnesses which come from bacteria, Babesiosis is caused by a parasite. It is transmitted by the deer tick and found mostly in northeastern coastal areas. According to state health statistics there were at least 4 deaths in Massachusetts, due to this disease, in 2015. It attacks the iron in the blood and can reduce your blood cell count to dangerous levels. This was the case for MacMillan. He did not have enough red blood cells to carry blood to his vital organs, and his bone marrow was being destroyed. A simple bruise could have caused fatal internal bleeding. The parasite that causes Babesiosis is very similar to the pathogens that cause malaria, so it was only when he fought with the drug company and insurance to receive an antimalarial drug called Atovaquone, that he began to recover. It will take him 120 days to recover his red blood cell count. He is lucky he survived.

Don’t Let This Happen To You

Rockport tick control is a must, as it is for all of Massachusetts. This story details the events of a man’s struggle with one of the more rare illnesses that ticks can carry, but ticks also spread Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. It’s important to protect yourself with the correct clothing and insect repellent when you travel through untreated wooded areas. Also, be reminded of the 6 C’s of tick control to limit the tick population on your property.

Our tick spray and tick tube programs can eliminate 85-90% of the ticks in your yard. Don’t let Alan MacMillan’s story become your story. Call us today! (978) 887-1177

Zika, Zika, Zika: Still Making the News Almost Daily in the North Shore

While Massachusetts remains on the lower end of the risk scale for a Zika Virus outbreak, compared to much of the country, we want to keep you abreast of the latest news in regards to research and discoveries. Of course, if it does become locally transmitted, we’ll be keeping you up to speed on that as well.

New Jersey Baby Born with Microcephaly Caused by Zika Virus

The biggest Zika new in the past week was the birth of a baby in New Jersey who is afflicted with severe microcephaly, some vision and intestinal abnormalities all caused by the Zika Virus. The baby’s mother came to the U.S. from Honduras. Her only symptom from Zika was a rash until prenatal testing exposed the baby’s microcephaly.

Scientists Discover How the Zika Virus Transfers from Pregnant Mother to Fetus

North-shore-mass-zika-pregnancy.jpgScientists released information in regards to how the Zika Virus manages to get from the mother to the fetus. Being a flavivirus, scientists were baffled when birth defects were proven to be linked to the virus. Normally a flavivirus (which includes West Nile Virus and yellow fever) is not transferred from pregnant mother to fetus. They discovered that the Zika Virus is essentially able to infect a type of cell that camouflages the virus so it can go undetected. Without the body detecting the infection, it does not mount a defense, and the virus can get past the placenta and into the babies blood supply and eventually neurological system. Some tested placental cells were more susceptible to this than others. Figuring out what makes cells susceptible and others not will aid in assessing the risk to create new preventative health care guidelines. As reported in Forbes, nutrition, genetic factors and the timing of the Zika infection could play a role in the risk for birth defects.

Zika Funding

There is quite a political fight happening over the funding for Zika Virus research within the United States Congress. Some think the danger of Zika is being overblown, some are using it as political currency, others are fighting tooth and nail to get as much funding as possible. While we await the result of this epic battle, we continue to be cautiously optimistic.

Zika prevention can start right at home with each homeowner. Following the 5 Ts of mosquito control and having your yard treated with mosquito barrier spray can significantly lower your exposure to mosquitoes – the main transmitter of the Zika Virus. Also, be aware of the CDC’s travel guide and if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, practice safe sex if you or your partner have traveled to an area where Zika is active.

Mosquito Control Districts Seek & Try Creative Mosquito Control Strategies for Combatting the Zika Virus

Aedes_aegyptiAs with the arrival of other new mosquito-borne disease, the threat of Zika Virus has resulted in some creative mosquito control methods being deployed. While these fun and unusual mosquito control methods are not currently being used in the North Shore of Massachusetts, we find them inspiring and interesting to consider.

Genetically Engineered Mosquitoes

In efforts to control the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, responsible for spreading Zika Virus and Yellow Fever, a British company called Oxitec has developed a genetically engineered male mosquito. This mosquito, when released into the wild will produce offspring that are infertile. With male mosquitoes not seeking blood meals, there is no additional annoyance for humans, and experts agree that within a few generations the mosquito populations will be sharply reduced in areas where they are deployed. Preliminary approval has been given by the FDA to release the mosquitoes in the Florida Keys, but they are still awaiting final approval.

The Gambusia fish, commonly known as the mosquitofish aggressively hunts and devours mosquito larvae and pupae before it can mature into blood-sucking adult mosquitoes. Local municipalities in New Jersey, Florida, and Texas are releasing the fish in stagnant land-locked water to assist in mosquito control efforts. The fish live well with koi and goldfish kept in backyard water features and are highly effective.

Despite All Your Best Efforts You Brought a Tick Home Anyway

Rockport-Mass-Tick-ControlSimply enjoying the great outdoors in Cape Ann and now you have a stowaway. So what do you do? The most important first step is making sure you safely remove the tick. Yes, it’s gross, but improper removal makes you more susceptible to becoming infected by a tick-borne illness such as Lyme disease. The importance of slowly and patiently following the steps to remove the entire tick from your pet or family member’s skin just can’t be emphasized enough.

What Should you Do With a Safely Removed Tick?

Tick disposal…how do you get rid of it? Or maybe the real question is should you get rid of it? Illnesses such as Lyme disease can be hard to diagnose and often it can take days to weeks for you to become symptomatic. Tick testing is another option and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst has a great program in place.

Massachusetts Tick Testing

Deer tick on q-tip in MAUMass has been testing ticks since 2006. If you remove a tick from you or your pet you can simply put it in a secure plastic bag, go online and fill out a form, and send the tick to Dr. Stephen Rich in the microbiology lab at UMass. They test the ticks for 5 different pathogens. “The beauty of this is it’s beneficial to individuals, so someone gets bit by a tick, they send to us, they get info about what they may have been exposed to,” states Dr. Rich in his interview with Western Mass News. These tests also help give more knowledge about the ticks people are finding which can lead to answers in fighting tick-borne illness.

Tick Testing for Easier Diagnosis If You Become Ill

Tick testing is a simple way to diagnose tick-borne illness and get yourself on the road to recovery BEFORE you actually become sick with symptoms. At the very least we suggest that you save the ticks that you remove, to become tested if you do become ill. The testing isn’t free, but some towns in Massachusetts are beginning to subsidize part of the cost. Considering that tick bites can lead to chronic Lyme, a debilitating disease, the low cost of testing ($50) is much less than dealing with the long-term effects of a chronic illness.

Is There Finally Hope for a NEW Lyme Vaccine for Humans?

deer tick on leaf North Shore MAWhile the controversy around the rise and fall of a Lyme disease vaccine for humans is a touchy subject, we can’t help but be excited when new science is published that gives us hope for a new Lyme vaccine. Living on the North Shore of Massachusetts, the number of deer ticks and the increased risk for Lyme disease is a daily concern for a large portion of the year. If a vaccine was available, we could certainly enjoy the outdoors with a little less anxiety.

Ten Years to Uncover the Inner Workings of the Deer Tick

Lead by Purdue University, a team of 93 scientists from 46 institutions, have spent the last ten years mapping the deer tick genome. The deer tick is the main vector for Lyme disease in the United States, a bugger we are all too familiar with here on the North Shore.

How Does Mapping the Deer Tick Genome Lead to a Vaccine?

tick-dna-opens-doors-for-North-Shore-lyme-vaccineThere are many great clues about how deer ticks live, feed, hunt and transmit disease within their DNA. The secrets to their effective carrying and transmitting of bacteria are among the secrets unlocked. Scientists see opportunity in identified proteins that aid in the deer tick’s replication and transmission of bacteria. These proteins can be manipulated to interfere with the replication and transmission of the infection, which could aid in vaccination creation. The information may also serve as inspiration to create other methods of disease interference.

The Deer Tick Genome Opens Many Doors for Tick Control & Tick-Borne Disease Prevention

Many unique features of ticks are being revealed in the tick genome project. Scientists can learn a great deal about the pain inhibitors found in tick saliva, how they digest toxic amounts of iron in the blood they eat and how they can expand their bodies to one hundred times their normal size during a blood meal. A key discovery about tick control is that twenty percent of the genes mapped are unique to ticks. The 20% that is tick-specific can help create new and improved insecticides that will specifically target ticks.

While the mapping of the deer tick genome is akin to opening the door to an endless library of information, we are hopeful that a key piece of information is in there to help the hundreds of thousands of people affected by Lyme disease each year.

Mosquito Squad North Shore owner AnthonyIn the meantime, lower your risks and still enjoy a care-free outdoor lifestyle with Mosquito Squad of the North Shore for tick control in your yard. Our tick spray eliminates 85-90% of ticks on contact and is complimented well by tick tubes, which eliminate larva and nymph ticks before they can emerge as potential Lyme disease transmitters.
